I hate this day.
Nov. 11th, 2017 10:35 amI hate this day because the messages concerning what it is about are so quietly mixed. It's a rare day to be thoughtful but can give the uneasy air that if you act in memorial, you all share the same thoughts on why.
My normal tactic is just to hide away and focus on what it significantly means for me. I'm not forgetting -- this day actually consumes me every year, especially as my org grants it as a stat because of where we're HQed, and the reason I'm taking the very rare maneuver of writing about it here is that I hope that by doing so it might get out of my system a bit more -- but I'm not remembering what I think many would prefer I "remember", based on some of the less quiet messages I see around at this time. And yet if we truly believe in the 'freedom' we keep saying we do then that approach should be fine.

Date: 2017-11-11 04:02 pm (UTC)When I were a young one, alternative Remembrance Days (which were actually much closer to the day’s original purpose) were common. Now this seems to have largely fallen by the wayside in favour of some sort of military recruitment/cult of the dead.

Date: 2017-11-12 05:10 am (UTC)Oh boy, totally agree. It's so personal. This recent thing where everyone feels like their outfit is the most important issue is all Facebook-y and Hollywood-y and awful compared to living through a goddamn 20th century war, imho.
