Liniments - the hot kind - open up blood vessels and bring a warming sensation, usually due to chemicals (think rubbing chili peppers on your skin). The thing to remember is that they're all mildly effective, and all will cease being effective after a while as your body catches on and says - hey, you tricked me into thinking this felt hot but it really isn't! Like how habitual hot-food eaters get accustomed to it. I solve that problem by having at least three different liniments that I can rotate between - typical ingredients include spearmint, menthol, capsaicin, cinnamon oil, etc.
